What is the 5-axis in CNC machine tools?

In CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine tools, the term "5-axis" refers to the number of directions in which the cutting tool can move. A 5-axis CNC machine tool has the capability to move the cutting tool simultaneously in five different axes: X, Y, Z, and two additional rotational axes, typically referred to as A and B.

X-axis: The X-axis represents the horizontal movement of the cutting tool from left to right or vice versa. It corresponds to the width of the workpiece.

Y-axis: The Y-axis represents the vertical movement of the cutting tool from front to back or vice versa. It corresponds to the depth of the workpiece.

Z-axis: The Z-axis represents the vertical movement of the cutting tool up and down. It corresponds to the height or thickness of the workpiece.

Programming complexity: Operating a 5-axis CNC machine requires advanced programming skills. The programming complexity increases with the additional axes, as it becomes more challenging to visualize and execute the tool's movement in multiple directions simultaneously. Skilled operators and programmers are necessary to optimize the machine's capabilities fully.

 

Longer setup time: Preparing a 5-axis CNC machine for a new job or workpiece can be time-consuming. The machine must be properly aligned and calibrated in all five axes, which can take more time compared to setting

 

What is the difference between 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining?

There are several main differences between 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining, including the range of machine movement, machining capability, and complexity:

 

Movement range: A 3-axis CNC machine tool has three linear movement axes, namely the X-axis, Y-axis, and Z-axis. This type of machine tool can only move and process in these three directions. The 5-axis CNC machine tool not only has linear movement on the X, Y, and Z axes, but also has two rotation axes, commonly referred to as the A and B axes. These two rotation axes enable the cutting tool to move and process in five directions simultaneously.

 

Processing capability: 3-axis CNC machine tools are suitable for relatively simple machining tasks, especially for workpieces that require planar or simple 3D machining. They are usually used for milling, drilling, cutting, and other operations. 5-axis CNC machine tools have higher processing capabilities and can handle more complex workpieces and geometric shapes. By rotating the axis, they can perform multiple inclined or curved surface machining, as well as higher-level tasks such as complex 3D surface machining, multi face machining, and cavity machining.

 

Complexity: 5-axis CNC machines are more complex than 3-axis machines. Operating and programming 5-axis machine tools requires higher-level skills and experience. Due to the need to simultaneously consider the motion and coordination of multiple axes, programming and operating a 5-axis machine tool is more complex. In contrast, the programming and operation of 3-axis machine tools are relatively simpler and more intuitive.

 

Cost: Due to its higher level of functionality and complexity, 5-axis CNC machines are usually more expensive than 3-axis machines. The additional moving axis and structural design requirements result in higher manufacturing costs. This also makes 5-axis machine tools less practical for some budget limited enterprises or individuals.
